Moore on Music


Billy Moore is the consummate professional percussionist, having played in almost all venues open to percussionists: symphony orchestras, philharmonic orchestras, broadway shows, big bands, jazz groups of all sizes, concert bands, film and recording studio orchestras and more. He has performed all over the U.S. and many other countries. The list of top artists with whom he has performed is a veritable Who's Who of the entertainment industry: Count Basie, Ray Charles, Lena Horne, Bob Hope, Sammy Davis Jr., Nellie Lutcher, Stevie Wonder, Dakota Staton, Redd Foxx, Oscar Brown Jr., Earl Grant, Billy Taylor, Percy Mayfield, The Four Tops, The New Christy Minstrels, Billy Daniels, Diana Ross, George Kirby, Maxine Weldon and many, many more!

Dr. Moore is recently retired after 13 years as percussion instructor at Clark Atlanta University.

Dr. Moore has performed for many television shows and movies, among them: The Wiz, Lee Wiley Story, Bob Hope Specials, Some Kind of Wonderful, Uptown, Lady Sings The Blues, Evolution Of The Blues, The Lucy Show, Scream Blackula Scream, Gospel Night at the Apollo, Body and Soul, Ray Charles Biography and Midnight Special to mention just a few.

Educational Background

After graduating from Stanton Senior High School in Jacksonville, Florida, Billy Moore went on to earn his B. A. in Music and Music Education from Florida A & M University (Marching "100" and Gallery of Distinction), and his Master's degree in Music and Music Education from Teachers College, Columbia University. Billy studied mallet percussion under the great master teacher Earl Hatch (Marimbas Unlimited - N. Hollywood). He has added to his considerable educational achievements by earning a Doctoral Degree from Columbia State University in Music and Music History. Billy is a Life member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. (Grand Polemarch's Certificate of Appreciation/Operating Assistant), Sigma Alpha Iota (Distinguished Music Educator), and Life Member of Hollywood Local #47 - American Federation of Musicians, and Who's - Who in the World of Percussion. He is also an inductee into (Jacksonville Florida) Durkeeville Historical Society and Ritz Theatre and La Villa Museum.

While pursuing his professional goals in Los Angeles, Billy also founded the Billy Moore Studio of Percussion. For 25 years he trained the best of the best. Many individuals gained a wealth of knowledge and benefits from his instruction, and his insight into helping his students acquire the strength, encouragement and skills to become successful in the performing arts. Quite a number of Billy's former students are currently performing or have performed with some world renowned artists.
